Research Methods in Sport Management

Graduate course

Purpose

The goal of this course is to introduce students to research methods for sport management. It exposes students to the key concepts of theory, theory development, and application of theories in research. Students will learn to critically evaluate urgent research topics in sport management and in general, and develop the ability to recognize the gap of knowledge in the literature. This graduate course provides students with the necessary skills to choose the most appropriate methodological approach in order to collect valid and reliable data and the ability to present a research report.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of:

1. The importance of research in developing knowledge.

2. The different types of research.

3. The research processes.

4. How to develop a research problem

5. How to design a research proposal

6. The purpose of a literature review

7. How to access literature necessary for a research proposal

8. The concepts and conceptual frameworks necessary to conduct research

9. The essential role of using a theory to support a research proposal

10. Be able to identify and discuss relevant lines of inquiry and theories in sport

management.

11. The importance of choosing the appropriate methodological approach

12. Qualitative versus quantitative research approaches

13. The processes for collecting data

14. The various types of analyses used to interpret data.

15. How to write the research report and present the results

16. Develop and present a research report of interest by applying/expanding relevant

theories

17. More advanced skills necessary to engage in research activities.

Sport and Sustainable Development

Undergraduate & graduate course

Purpose

This course examines the quality and status of contemporary sustainable development in sport research, knowledge, and practice. Master's degree candidates will investigate a variety of issues that exist in the modern world society, and they will be introduced with a sustainable development framework. Participants of the course will complete projects that explore aspects of sustainable development in the sport.

 

Goals

  • Understand scientific perspectives and practical implications for addressing human activities threats on sustainability;

  • Critically assess the existing literature, theories, and assumptions to the scientific evidence relevant to sustainable development;

  • Provide knowledgeable and strategical plans for sustainable development through sport. 

 

Objectives

  • Upon completion of this course, students are expected to successfully:

  • Understand how human activities affect social, environmental, ethical and economic systems globally Recognize the distinct value of sustainable development research and practices in modern society

  • Analyze the sport industry's impacts on the key aspects of sustainability

  • Apply sustainable development techniques in sport business context

  • Synthesize current literature and theoretical frameworks 

  • Evaluate critically and create judgments on current knowledge 

  • Produce and communicate a set of strategical plans

Advertising in Sport

Graduate course

Purpose

This course examines the quality and status of contemporary advertising in sport, the knowledge, skills, concepts, and practical implications required for successful advertising in the sport industry. Strategies and techniques for successful advertising will be studied. Also, this course introduces students to research in sport marketing communications and advertising, in academic writing and the publication process.

 

Objectives

  • Upon completion of this course, students are expected to successfully:

  • Understand the integrated marketing communication (IMC)

  • Increase understanding in sport marketing and promotional mix

  • Recognize the distinct value of advertising in the sport industry 

  • Review literature in sport marketing research

  • Analyze appropriate techniques and tools in developing marketing communications

  • Apply theories to practice regarding sport communications

  • Synthesize current literature of advertising and IMC into sport marketing context

  • Evaluate critically and create judgments on current knowledge of advertising in sport

  • Produce and communicate a set of strategical plans in sport advertising

Strategic Consumer Management in Sport

Undergraduate course

Description

This course examines the quality and status of contemporary sport consumer behavior scholarship. 

 

Goals

  • Understand the theoretical and practical implications for addressing consumption habits in sport

  • Critically assess the existing literature, theories and assumptions to the scientific evidence relevant to sport consumer behavior

  • Provide knowledgeable and strategical solutions in sport consumption issues of the global sport industry

 

Objectives

Upon completion of this course students are expected to successfully:

·       Understand how consumers perceive sport as a product and service

  • Recognize the distinct value of sport consumption habits

  • Analyze sport event consumption

  • Apply consumer behavior theories in sport management

  • Synthesize current literature and theoretical frameworks related to sport consumer behavior

  • Evaluate critically and create judgements on current literature

  • Produce and communicate a set of strategical planning approaches
